PhilGBC and Ayala pilot green building standards
5/20/2010 | Ayala Foundation
On May 5, the Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC), in partnership with Ayala Land and Ayala Foundation, held a workshop to discuss the development of the Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence, or BERDE, National Green Building Rating System. The workshop took the participants through the standards, and allowed them to assess a project using the checklist of BERDE parameters.
Taking off from international building standards, such as the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), or the United Kingdom Green Building Council's Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) standard, PhilGBC aims to give Philippine developers the same kind of guidance as the country begins to demand more environmentally-sound real estate and property developments.
BERDE is a designed as a third party certification, monitoring and verification scheme that will allow property developers to benchmark against a single rating system specifically for green buildings. The standards are intended to guide decision makers in designing, constructing and operating greener buildings.
A pilot program was incorporated into the development of the BERDE standards. The pilot phase will help ensure that the rating system is appropriate and relevant to local conditions and contexts. The pilot program allows PhilGBC to gather input on the standards from the project proponents who will be the main users of the standards.
Property developers Megaworld and the Net Group, Ayala Property Management Corporation, Station Square East Commercial Corporation, and lighting provider, Philips, were also present at the workshop.
